WE WANT TO MEET THE NEEDS OF TODAY BUT ALSO FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

In the video below Harry Carter, managing director at Carters Building Consultancy talks you through some of our sustainable approaches for a selection of developments we are currently working on. Along with a number of clients' testimonials.

Construction and sustainability

The main feature of our business model places sustainable growth for all three subsidiary companies at its core. The business has invested considerably and formed two additional companies.  One specifically focusing on sustainable high-end developments and a photography studio. What is also really encouraging is the confirmed commissions for the next 2 years and foreseeable future.

The building and construction industry is responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions globally! Which in turn government has introduced The Climate Change Act.

So, what does that mean for us?

Firstly, we need to understand how we can meet the needs of today but also for future generations, and by doing this we look at the whole lifecycle of a building from design through to occupation and understand sustainable development, carbon emissions, and renewable energy.

What is the definition of a carbon-neutral building? Carbon neutral development

For us when greenhouse gas emissions are minimised at all stages including manufacturing, during construction, and during use.  The emissions that occur are balanced by climate positive initiatives so that the net carbon footprint over time is zero which is demonstrated on the weighing scales on the right.

Assessing the sustainability and carbon-neutral developments there are tools and methods available within the industry to assess the climate impact and greenhouse gas emissions of building projects. For example, dynamic simulation modeling is a tool that uses our 3D models and provides extremely accurate and powerful data for accessing the environmental performance of a building.

As a standard within the current building regulations, EPC is used to regulate the energy efficiency of a residential dwelling and SEMBEM calculations for commercial buildings.

Currently, the minimum requirement for a residential dwelling is a score of E, A being the best and G being the worst.

As you can see on the righthand side, here is a development we are already working on, reusing shipping containers and retrofitting a multi-purpose complex consisting of a hydrotherapy pool, conference/meeting, and office spaces, classrooms, shops, and indoor energy efficient FIFA accredited football pitch.

We have been incredibly fortunate to receive a number of awards and have been nominated finalists for several others including the Red Rose Awards back in 2018, The Sub 36 Awards which we subsequently sponsored the following year, and sat on the judging panel. I was shortlisted for the RICS Young Surveyor of the year awards.

For us at Carter's, architecture is about creating long-term value. We work proactively to ensure that our projects have the lowest environmental impact possible.

The image and above is a design we have completed for a parcel of land we have recently acquired. Developing 4 sustainable luxury dwellings which are very exciting for the company.  Not only are we able to provide consultancy services but also leading the industry with innovative high spec and sustainable dwellings for the market.

We have successfully completed 5 contemporary, luxury towns houses in Poulton-Le-Fylde for a contemporary and sustainable development within a conservation area.

  • The EPC rating is a B energy efficiency rating. (86 out of 100).
  • The average household produces 6 tonnes of CO2 from energy used for heating, lighting, and power to our homes.
  • Breck Point only produces 2 tonnes of Co2

Additionally, 100% of all our projects like the Breck Point are sustainable we go above and beyond the minimum requirements for all our developments, small or large.

Finally, we have had some really exciting news receiving full planning approval for a carbon-neutral development in Lancashire.  This will be the first of its kind in the area which is absolutely fantastic news and a huge industry achievement.

Prospect Farm Consists of 4 bespoke luxury dwellings. 7 bedrooms, swimming pools, and large open plan 21st century living in mind.

The innovative architectural design and sustainability credentials such as carbon neutral, environmental, economic growth and social improvements proposed for the site will be amongst the first in the area to hold such a rating.

Significantly enhancing the area in design and sustainability credentials. This is a fantastic achievement for Carter’s on an incredibly sensitive site.

We will be using this development to set the benchmark in Lancashire carbon natural developments. Our sustainable values will ensure we will become one of the leading building consultants in the northwest and specializes in sustainable design.

The company has a very strong pipeline of new and sustainable projects. Including:

Within the next 3-5 years we have plans to expand and provide a one-stop-shop consultancy service. We will continue investing in technology and innovation, such as BIM (Building Information Modelling, as well as developing internal processes, working towards the ISO 9001 certification.  With our strong pipeline of work and exciting development of our own, our turnover next year is easily going to double with very strong profit margins which after a very challenging year is very exciting to share with you. Electric cars for all employees, and signing up to tree planting scheme.

The average person creates 12.7 tonnes of Co2 emissions. With us having 5 employees we have pledged to plant 720 trees which will remove 54 tonnes of CO2 every year. Making a pledge to plant 750 trees a year offsetting our internal carbon emissions with new trees and removing our Co2 emissions.

Having already won approval for a carbon-neutral, residential development in Lancashire, this is a first of its kind. We have adapted to a challenging market and progressively used the pandemic to the best of our advantage. Hybrid work solutions have reduced commuting times, increased productivity, used interactive technologies, encouraging our clients to be as green as feasibly possible. We have aspired to be as sustainable going above and beyond minimum requirements future-proofing our developments not just meeting today's needs but also for future generations.

We are incredibly excited about the awards ceremony and we look forward to meeting all the other finalists.
